The rate of kidnapping has dropped following the arrest of Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (a.k.a Evans), police said at the weekend. Police spokesman Moshood Jimoh, who spoke with The Nation in Abuja, said the International Police (Interpol) was investigating Evans’ activities. He said: “When we paraded him (Evans) in Lagos, I told the public that the arrest of Evans marked the beginning of the end for kidnapping. “Since that day, the rate of kidnapping has seriously gone down and that shows that we were able to hit the right target. “As for keeping him (in custody), we have been able to secure three months’ remand warrant from the Federal High Court, Abuja to enable us round off our investigations. “At present, the contacts and crimes he committed in other countries, including Ghana and South Africa, are of interest. “We have series of complaints that border on murder, several kidnappings and armed robberies against him and these are all capital offences that are not bailable at the level of the police. “They are not even ordinarily bailable in the courts.” Jimoh said Evans’ detention was justifiable and there would be no need to rush his case and make mistakes that would disappoint Nigerians. “In his alleged offences, the lives of Nigerians were at stake and we must be able to get everything to ensure that we don’t lose the case in the courts. “For any sensible police force, it won’t be appropriate to rush to court in a complex case like this because investigation is a scientific approach to actually situate a suspect at the scene of crime and convince the court that this is the person that did this and that. “That is why it is important that we are meticulous in putting details together and explaining how someone committed atrocities such that at the end of the day, Nigerians will be happy with us if the suspect is convicted for all the offences he committed alongside other members of his gang. “Nigerians will not be happy with us if we rush to court and lose the case on mere technicalities. “We are mindful of that as well as his fundamental human rights. That is why we approached the courts for a three-month remand warrant to keep him in police custody,” Jimoh explained. He stated that Nigeria’s membership of Interpol and its platform’s responsibilities necessitate active collaboration on the Evans case and the investigation of associated issues. “We are very active on the platform of Interpol. If you can recall, it was revealed that he (Evans) has a Ghanaian international passport and the passport is still very valid. “There are clear indications of the level of criminality that goes across the border. “So, we will do what is just in that circumstance and after completing investigations, we will be able to know where we will share experience and ideas with various jurisdictions involved and we will all know how to deal with the matter. “Yes, Interpol is already fully involved and we are all out to do a thorough job and it is in the interest of the public because such high level suspects should not continue walking the streets and committing such atrocities. “We hope to ensure that the cause of justice is served at the end of the day,” Jimoh said. BREAKING: Nationwide Panic As Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans, Set To Escape From Police Custody Anytime From Now
0
Alleged security report, has revealed that the recently caught notorious kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, aka Evans, may attempt a jailbreak, if remanded in prison custody.
According to Vanguard, Evans poses as a security threat to Nigeria, if he is remanded.
The operatives believe that the sophisticated kidnapper, could use his high profile network to obtain some respite in prison, and organise a break-out eventually.
It was also learnt that all the monies and properties criminally obtained by the alleged kidnapper, during his 20-year reign have not been traced, and in such a situation where he has access to such vast sums of money, he could use his money while in prison, to reoganise his network and set up a new gang.
The source said that given Evans’ sophistication, he could attempt a prison break
Recall, that the Police have obtained a court order and as such, are legally backed to detain the high profile kidnapper for the next three months, before his prosecution.
The security source claimed that top criminals with access to huge sums of money when arrested, are treated with respect by prison officials, and consequently given access to social amenities, like cell phones and internet connections.
The source said: “High-profile criminals enjoy VIP treatments in prison custody because they have money. We have learned that these suspects usually pay the warders to be detained in cells that are classified as VIP, and they would have access to their phones as well as the internet. These suspects don’t usually feel like they are in prison custody because they enjoy unlimited access to visitors anytime.
“Since his money has not been recovered completely because we had information that he has hotels in Ghana and South Africa, it will be wrong to send him to prison. He is also said to have auto spare parts outlets in Ghana and some other Africa countries. People working for him are numerous and the Police are yet to arrest all of them. If he is remanded in prison with these assets unrecovered, Evans could rule any prison. Evans, can be in prison and easily recruit men outside, radicalise them, buy them arms and send them out for operations. Evans can organise a jailbreak
“Evans could enjoy the security of the prison and unleash terror on the society. We have seen a lot of criminals like him and they have done same
“We have had several cases like that in the past. We had the case of Henry Chibueze, alias Vampire, who kidnapped and killed several persons and was arrested in 2015 by the Department of State Security Service, DSS. While in prison, Vampire sponsored several groups, who carried out kidnappings on his behalf. Having raised enough money he staged an escape from the prison, while he was being taken to court. Luckily for us, he was gunned down, a few weeks after his escape. There were also other cases in Abuja and Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recently.”
Backing his claim that criminals in prisons could still orchestrate crime in the free society, the source highlighted the escapades a suspect in Kuje and Port Harcourt prisons.
He said the suspect masterminded several fraudulent acts, while locked up in the prison.
“When members of the syndicate were arrested, they confessed that their leader was serving in Kuje Prison. One of the cases in Port Harcourt, saw a detainee operating a massive kidnap gang. The kidnapper had organised several kidnappings, before members of his gang were apprehended, and he was exposed.”
