The hoverbikes, as seen in a Facebook video distributed by Gulf News, appear to be Scorpion-3s built by the Russian company Hoversurf. On its website, however, the company does not advertise the Scorpion-3 to law enforcement, saying that “for the moment, [the] SCORPION platform is increasingly seen as an extreme sports instrument, yet the vessel’s transportation potential remains evident.”
The Dubai police say that they plan to use the hoverbikes in emergency situations, given how quickly their batteries can drain. The Scorpion-3s can only run for 25 minutes, and they’re not exactly speed demons either, hitting 43 miles per hour (70 KMH). But they can hit that speed while flying 4-6 feet off the ground, high up enough to fly over traffic on a backed up highway

The city has also begun testing robotic flying taxis with the hopes that at least 25 percent of all travel in the city will be automated by 2030. Earlier this year, the Dubai police announced that self-driving cars would begin acting as mobile surveillance units by the end of the year. At this rate it won’t be long until the entire city is populated solely by robots.
